It was a record-breaking year for Whitney’s Walk, an organization raising money for depression awareness and suicide prevention. The group raised nearly $140,000 dollars.
This time of year many people young and old have a tough time with depression. For the past 10 years a group has been holding an event to help raise awareness about suicide and mental illness.
The number one factor that drives people to kill themselves is depression.
“They’re hurting so much, they don’t know another way,” suicide prevention educator at the HULT Center Susan Bishop said. “Depression is so much more common than we realize. They estimate that one in four people in the United States will experience depression at some point in their lives.”
Suicide is one of the top ten leading causes of death in the United States and third among those aged 15 to 24. One event looks to stamp out that statistic. More than 1,300 people signed up for the 11th Annual Whitney’s Walk.
Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States. Saturday thousands of people nationwide came together to remember those they lost. This is the Hult Center’s 11th annual Whitney’s walk for life–participants gathered at Jubilee College State park to raise awareness.
