Approximately 35% of the adult population have prediabetes and 9 out of 10 don’t know they have it. Prediabetes increases your risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. The good news is that type 2 diabetes is preventable through long-term structured lifestyle modification as evidenced by the National Diabetes Prevention Study. In fact, studies show that people with prediabetes who take part in a program such as Prevent T2 can decrease their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 58% (and 71% for people over the age of 60) (CDC, 2018). Hult Center for Healthy Living has received full recognition from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for demonstrating effectiveness for this evidence-based lifestyle change program. About the Program
Prevent T2 uses trained Lifestyle Coaches to facilitate discussions and lessons to help participants learn new, healthy lifestyle skills, set goals, and stay motivated, while interacting with a cohort of people with similar goals and challenges. Throughout the one year program, there will be private weigh-ins, food and activity tracking, and action planning to help participants be successful. There are 16 group sessions held weekly during Phase One, followed by monthly sessions during Phase Two for the remainder of the calendar year. There are a total of 24-26 sessions for each cohort. A limited number of participants may register, so please sign up early. The cost to participate is $100 for the entire one year program, which helps to cover the cost of materials for each participant.
This program is intended for adults at high risk for type 2 diabetes. It is not intended for those individuals diagnosed with diabetes. If you have been diagnosed with diabetes, or have had blood glucose screenings greater than 126, or A1C 6.5 or higher, please call UnityPoint Health Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism at (309) 672-4565. All Prevent T2 program participants MUST meet ALL of the following:
- Be 18 years of age or older
- Not pregnant at the time of enrollment
- Not diagnosed with type 1 or type 2 diabetes; if you are seeking resources for diabetics, please click here (brochure available here)
- Have a body mass index (BMI) of ≥25 (or ≥23, if Asian American); You can calculate your BMI here.
AND must meet ONE of the following:
- A recent (within the past year) blood test meeting ONE of the following specifications:
- Fasting glucose of 100 to 123 mg/dl
- Plasma glucose measured 2 hours after a 75 gm glucose load of 140 to 199 mg/dl
- A1c of 5.7 to 6.4 (note, if your A1C is higher than 6.4, please contact UnityPoint Health Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at 309-672-4565.)
- Clinically diagnosed gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) during a previous pregnancy
- A positive screening for prediabetes based on the CDC Prediabetes Screening Test, which can be found here

Take it from Mary Lou, this program will change your life.
Mary Lou and Chuck have it all. They have one another. The couple has two daughters and four grandchildren and a pup called Poppy and a Quaker Parrot named Kye. And they have their church and their friends but, they’re pretty lucky – Chuck and Mary Lou, they have one another.
“We’ve been married for 55 years,” said Chuck. “I’ve been pre-diabetic for ten years,” said Mary Lou. “But I wanted to get healthy, and start feeling better. Just in case Chuck needs me.” Earlier in 2016 Mary Lou joined the National Diabetes Prevention Program at the Hult Center for Healthy Living. “I feel better and I look better,” said Mary Lou. “My blood pressure and cholesterol are under control. The program helped me to eat better and I’ve learned so much about food, what to eat and how to eat. But one of the most important parts of the program is being with other people. We don’t have to try and do this alone.”
“I can tell that the comradery Mary Lou shares with others in the class is important,” said Chuck. “I don’t get to spend as much time with her now,” Chuck said with a big grin. “But we eat better, and I can see the changes in Mary Lou. I’m proud of her.”
There’s only one other thing that could make this couple even more proud “A great grandbaby,” said Mary Lou. “A great-grandbaby.”
